Thank you for visiting my website. I hope you will return often between now and the general election.
Since the last election, Stephen Harper and the Conservative government have been doing just as they promised - standing up for Canada.
Stephen Harper has put more dollars in your family's budget, through measures such as a cutting the GST from 7% to 6%, with another 1% cut to come. Thanks to the tax reductions in the 2006 budget, tax freedom day arrived on June 20th, four days earlier than last year.
Since July 2006, Canada's New Government has been providing families with $100 per month - up to $1,200 a year - for each child under the age of six to help cover the costs of whichever form of childcare they choose.
Stephen Harper has advanced an aggressive environmental agenda, and at the recent G-8 summit, helped broker an agreement that all the world's major emitters need to be involved in developing a new strategy on global warming.
The Harper government has also made progress on making our communities safer. It has eliminated house arrest for people who commit serious, violent crimes and created stiff sentences for street racers who hurt innocent bystanders.
Unfortunately, four other important crime bills that have been passed in the House of Commons are bogged down in the Liberal-dominated senate. One would protect our children by raising the Age of Protection from 14 to 16. Another would set mandatory prison sentences for gun crime. And a third would end the revolving door of bail for gun crime.
The Liberals' stubbornness is even more unfortunate, now that Toronto is suffering through yet another "Summer of the Gun." On crime, democratic reform, and so many other issues, the Liberals are simply out of touch with the concerns and priorities of everyday Canadians.
In its first year, Stephen Harper and the Conservative government have delivered change for the better. I hope to have the opportunity to continue getting things done for the citizens of Bramalea-Gore-Malton, as your MP. In the meantime, feel free to contact me with your comments and questions.
Stella!
