Responsible Leadership for a Strong Canada
February 26, 2008
![]() Under the leadership of the Conservative Government, taxes are at their lowest level in nearly 50 years, the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in 33 years, and Canada’s debt burden is at its lowest level since the 1970’s. Today, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty will build on this record of responsible leadership when he tables the third budget of the new Conservative Government. The 2008/2009 budget will be a balanced budget that will build on the Conservative Government’s strong foundation of lowering taxes, reducing debt and focusing on the clear priorities of Canadians. The 2008/2009 budget will also send a clear message about the importance of prudence in uncertain times. With increasing economic turmoil in the United States and elsewhere, it is more important than ever that Canada’s government keep its fiscal house in order. What Canada cannot afford is weak leadership and risky spending that will jeopardize Canada’s fiscal position and the jobs that depend on it. Since the last election, the Stéphane Dion Liberals have made 89 spending commitments that would push Canada at least $62.5 billion deeper into debt. Mr. Dion must be prepared to do more than simply complain and pass judgment on the commitments and priorities of others. Now is the time for him to come forward with a costed plan of his own. Until he does so, he will only continue to remind Canadians why he is not a leader and not worth the risk. Strong governments run balanced budgets. Strong leaders set clear priorities. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government will continue to follow through on their commitments and build a brighter future for all Canadians. |
