Strong Economic Leadership
March 07, 2008

With increasing economic turmoil in the United States and elsewhere, it is more important than ever that Canada’s Government stay prudent and keep its fiscal house in order.

Today, under the leadership of the Conservative Government, taxes are at their lowest level in nearly 50 years, the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in 33 years, and Canada’s debt burden is at its lowest level since the 1970’s.

This means more Canadians are working, they are holding on to more of their own money, and that more families than ever are able to plan for the future with confidence.

Later today Prime Minister Stephen Harper will address the Economic Club of Toronto, and provide more details on what the recently passed Budget 2008 will deliver for Canadians. The Conservative Government’s budget plan is based on a prudent approach that will keep the budget balanced, pay down debt, and focus on the clear priorities of Canadians.

A real leader stands up for what is right and never runs from a difficult decision. Canadians can always count on Prime Minister Stephen Harper to stand up for what he believes in and do whatever it takes to keep Canada growing and strong.

In contrast, Canadians can only guess about what the Stéphane Dion Liberals stand for. Despite making spending commitments that would plunge Canada at least $62.5 billion deeper into debt, Stéphane Dion continues to hide the true cost of his spending promises. The Liberals have become so weak that they overwhelmingly, chose to abstain from voting on the budget. In abandoning their job as the “Official Opposition” they are once again reminding Canadians that, in government, they would take Canada down a very risky path.

Strong governments run balanced budgets. Strong leaders set clear priorities and stand up for what they believe in. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Government will continue to show responsible leadership that will keep Canada strong.
