Conservative Victory in Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River
March 18, 2008
![]() Yesterday voters in the riding of Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River handed Stéphane Dion a strategically significant loss in this previously Liberal seat. In handing Mr. Dion yet another by-election defeat, local voters once again proved what more and more Canadians are recognizing: Stéphane Dion is not a leader. Mr. Dion’s news was not much better in Vancouver Quadra. This riding had, for years been a Liberal stronghold that the Liberals counted on to win by large margins. Yet last night, Mr. Dion’s candidate could barely squeak through. Last night’s election results also delivered a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. It is rare for a governing party to pick up seats or increase their share of the vote during a by-election. This is a clear sign that Canadians recognize and appreciate the strong leadership and real results they’re getting from having Conservative Members of Parliament in Ottawa. Thanks to a strong campaign from Rob Clarke local families chose to elect a Conservative MP who will continue to work to build on the Conservative record of a stronger economy, lower taxes, safer communities, real benefits for parents, and strong proud place in the world for Canada. Congratulations to Rob Clarke on this important victory. When Parliament resumes, the House of Commons will be joined by one more Conservative MP. Most importantly, the families of Desnethé—Missinippi—Churchill River will have the new stronger representation that they deserve. |
